There is a moment on every spiritual path where something inside us softens. Not because we’ve achieved more or learned something new, but because we finally remember what has always been true: Reiki and unconditional love are not separate from who we are. They are the essence of our being, the quiet frequency beneath every breath, every choice, every moment of presence.
Reiki is unconditional love, and we are not separate from it.
Remembering that we are not separate sits at the heart of Reiki practice. It’s also the essence of the landscapes that shaped Reiki’s origins. In April 2026, I undertook a Reiki pilgrimage and spent time in the mountains where Mikao Usui, the man who formalised Reiki, also spent time. One of those key mountains is Mount Kurama. Long before Reiki, it was a revered place where nature and spirit are not separate, and where the mountain itself is understood as a living being. Being on Kurama invites a remembering that energy is not something outside of you, but something you are already part of.
This is the foundation of Reiki.
This is the foundation of our humanity.
Reiki and Unconditional Love as a Living Frequency
Many people first come to Reiki seeking tools, structure, or a way to support their wellbeing. However, the deeper truth is that Reiki and unconditional love are not something we ‘do.’ It is a frequency we return to, a frequency of compassion, connection, and presence.
The Reiki Precepts remind us of this through the principle of kotodama. The words of the Reiki precepts are not just statements; they carry energetic resonance. These words invite alignment not only through meaning, but through sound, repetition, and presence. This allows the practice to move beyond the mind into our whole being.
Reiki is not outside us.
Reiki is the remembering of who we already are.
Mount Kurama: A Mirror of Our Own Nature
Mount Kurama, the birthplace of Usui Sensei’s awakening, is often described as a living field of energy. But its deeper teaching is simple:
The mountain is not powerful because it is sacred.
It is sacred because it reflects the truth of our own nature.
The hexagram mandala at Kurama‑dera symbolises the union of heaven and earth, a reminder that we are both grounded and connected, human and divine. It is an embodied experience of alignment, where there is no need to force connection.
This is Reiki.
Not effort.
Not striving.
Just remembering.
Mount Hiei: Discipline, Devotion, and Lineage
Where Kurama opens us, Mount Hiei steadies us.
Home to Tendai Buddhism and centuries of spiritual discipline, Mount Hiei teaches that awakening is not a single moment but a practice. A rhythm. A devotion.
Mount Hiei represents structure, discipline, and lineage.
Reiki is not only an energetic experience.
It is a way of living, with clarity, kindness, and integrity.
We Are Not Separate From the Sacred
One of the most profound teachings woven throughout this pilgrimage is the dissolution of the separation between self and nature, self and spirit, self and energy.
The Tengu of Kurama, which are mythical guardians of the mountain often misunderstood as tricksters, are described as reflections of our own ego and identity. They show us where we cling, where we perform, where we forget our true nature. Encountering the energy of the Tengu is an invitation to see more clearly… and to move beyond the stories that limit our growth.
Reiki invites us to soften these layers.
Not to transcend the self, but to become more honest within it.
Living as the Mountain
Reiki is not something we switch on during a session.
It is the way we breathe, speak, listen, and move through the world.
Reiki continues through you, expressed not as something separate, but as something integrated into the way you move through the world.
This is the heart of Reiki practice:
- To live with presence
- To meet ourselves with compassion
- To recognise that unconditional love is our natural state
- To remember that we are not separate from the mountain, the light, or the lineage
We are the mountain.
We are the frequency we seek.
