Why Reiki Level 3 Is Split Into Master and Teacher

As Reiki continues to grow in popularity, you may notice that teachers structure their Level 3 training differently. Some offer a single Reiki Master level, while others split Level 3 into two distinct stages: Reiki Master and Reiki Master Teacher. Both approaches honour the lineage, but they serve different needs, intentions, and stages of readiness.
In this blog, I’ll explain why some teachers choose to separate these levels, and share the personal story behind why I created a more spacious, embodied, and tailored Master Teacher pathway for my own students.

Understanding the Two Parts of Level 3 Reiki

Traditionally, Level 3 includes two components:

  • Reiki Master, receiving the Master symbol, deepening your personal practice, and stepping into self‑mastery.
  • Reiki Master Teacher, learning how to attune others, hold teaching space, and guide students through their own Reiki journey.

Some teachers combine these into one training. Others separate them to honour the very different energetic, emotional, and practical skills involved. Both are valid. The difference lies in the intention.

Why do Some Teachers Separate the Master and Teacher Levels?

  1. Master and Teaching Are Two Different Journeys
Becoming a Reiki Master is an inner journey, a deepening into your own energy, intuition, and alignment. It’s about self‑leadership, clarity, and living Reiki as a way of being. Becoming a Reiki Teacher is a different path.

It asks you to:

  • Hold space for others
  • Guide students through their own healing
  • Attune people safely and ethically
  • Communicate clearly and confidently
  • Understand group dynamics
  • Embody the lineage with integrity

These are skills that take time, practice, and support to develop. Splitting the levels allows students to honour both journeys fully.

2. Not Everyone Who Wants Mastery Wants to Teach
Many students feel called to deepen their personal practice but have no desire to teach, at least not right away.
Offering the Master’s level separately allows them to:

  • Expand spiritually
  • Strengthen and trust their intuition
  • Refine their energetic sensitivity
  • Integrate the Master symbol
  • Step into a more grounded version of themselves without the pressure of becoming a teacher before they’re ready.

3. Teaching Requires Embodiment, Not Just Knowledge
Attuning others is a sacred responsibility. It requires:

  • Emotional maturity
  • Energetic discernment
  • Clarity of intention
  • Confidence in your own practice
  • The ability to guide others through their fears, questions, and breakthroughs

Separating the Teacher level ensures students have time to embody their practice before stepping into leadership.

4. Students Have Different Goals and Timelines

  • Some want to teach their children or partner.
  • Some want to teach small circles.
  • Some want to build a full Reiki practice.
  • Some want to deepen their spiritual path.

Splitting the levels allows teachers to tailor the training to each student’s goals, rather than assuming everyone wants the same outcome.

My Story: Why I created a more in-depth Master Teacher Pathway

Before I became a Reiki Master Teacher, I spent years working as a school teacher. That experience shaped everything about the way I now guide Reiki students.

Teaching taught me how to:

  • Recognise different learning needs
  • Support people through self‑doubt
  • Create safe, inclusive learning environments
  • Mentor students as they grow into their own voice
  • Hold space for transformation, not just information

When I reached Level 3 in my own Reiki journey, I realised something important:
I didn’t just want to learn how to teach Reiki; I wanted to understand myself as a teacher in this capacity.
I wanted to:

  • Explore my voice
  • Understand my leadership style
  • Learn how to hold space with integrity
  • Feel confident guiding others
  • Embody the lineage in a way that felt authentic
  • Grow into the role, rather than rush into it

The traditional ‘one‑weekend Master Teacher’ model didn’t feel spacious enough for that kind of growth. I needed time, integration, and mentorship, the same things I now offer my students.

A Mentored, Embodied Approach

This approach is ideal for students who want to:

  • Teach loved ones
  • Run small circles
  • Offer professional trainings
  • Explore their leadership in a supported way

It’s not about producing teachers quickly. It’s about nurturing teachers who feel grounded, confident and aligned.

I guide students to:

  • Understand their unique teaching style
  • Practise attunements with support
  • Learn how to structure classes
  • Hold space for different personalities and needs
  • Teach from authenticity, not performance

It’s a journey of becoming, not just learning.

Who the Split Level 3 Structure Is For

This approach is ideal for students who:

  • Want a deeper, more embodied Master experience
  • Feel called to teach but want mentorship as they grow
  • Value spaciousness, integration, and personal guidance
  • Want training tailored to their goals, not a one‑size‑fits‑all model

It honours the truth that teaching Reiki is not just a skill, it’s a calling.

Honouring Your Path as a Reiki Teacher

Whether you choose a combined Level 3 or a split Master/Master Teacher pathway, what matters most is alignment.
Your Reiki journey is uniquely yours, and so is your teaching style. Let yourself move at your timeline.
Splitting Level 3 creates more space for students to grow into who they’re becoming, with clarity, confidence, and integrity.

A Gentle Invitation to Your Next Step

If you’re feeling the pull toward Level 3, whether for your own growth or because you feel called to guide others, I’d love to support you.

You’re welcome to explore Reiki course options:

  • Reiki Level 3 (Master) Training
  • Reiki Master Teacher Mentorship
  • Reiki Level 1 and 2 Training if you’re earlier on your path

My approach is spacious, grounded, and tailored to your goals. Whether you want to teach your children, hold small circles, or step into a wider teaching role, we’ll shape your journey together. Your teacher is already within you. My role is to help you meet them.
