Chakra Journal Prompts: Explore the Seven Main Chakras

The chakra system can give us a framework for exploring different areas of our lives, from grounding and creativity to communication, intuition and spirituality.

One way to explore the chakras is through questions.

Rather than trying to work out whether a chakra is ‘blocked’, ‘open’ or telling you something specific, journal prompts can help you become curious about the themes traditionally associated with each energy centre and what those themes bring to your attention.

You don’t have to journal in a particular way, either.

You might write your responses, record a voice note, draw, paint or simply sit with a question for a while. Some prompts may immediately bring something to mind, while others may not feel particularly relevant to you.

Use what feels useful and leave what doesn’t.

The questions and affirmations below are starting points for exploring the seven main chakras through your own experience.

Affirmations

Affirmations have been included with the journal prompts below. These are usually ‘I am’ statements and offer supportive energy for a particular area of your life you are focusing on. Think of affirmations as statements that cheer you on and offer encouragement. The phrases ‘I am learning, ‘ ‘ I am beginning, ‘ and ‘ I am now ‘ offer tweaks after the ‘I am’ statements, which is helpful if you are new to affirmations.

The nervous system and subconscious may have established a different belief pattern, and stating ‘I am’ can feel too strong in your energy system. For example, ‘I am worthy of love’ might not be believable to the subconscious. But on the other hand, stating, ‘I am learning to be worthy of love’ may feel more accessible. By framing the ‘I am’ statements as an invitation, it becomes easier for your energy system to open to change and a new form of safety.

How to Use Chakra Journal Prompts

You can work through all seven chakras, choose one that you’re curious about or select a question that simply catches your attention.

Try not to put pressure on yourself to find a profound answer.

A question might lead to an insight, bring something into your awareness or simply give you another perspective to consider.

You can also return to the same question later and notice whether your response has changed.

The purpose isn’t to arrive at the ‘correct’ interpretation of your chakra system. It’s to give yourself somewhere to begin exploring.

A Note About the Chakra Affirmations

I’ve included a few affirmations alongside the journal prompts.

You don’t have to repeat an affirmation that doesn’t feel true or useful to you.

Sometimes a statement like “I am worthy of love” can feel like too big a leap. If so, you can adjust the wording.

For example:

I am worthy of love.

could become:

I am learning to recognise my worth.

or:

I am open to exploring what worthiness means to me.

Words such as “I am learning…”, “I am beginning…” and “I am open to…” can make an affirmation feel more like an invitation than something you’re trying to convince yourself to believe.

Choose language that feels meaningful to you.

Base Chakra Journal Prompts

The Base or Root Chakra is commonly explored through themes of grounding, stability, belonging, physicality, family and our foundations.

Journal Prompts

  • What values are important to me?
  • Where in my life do I feel most grounded and steady?
  • What helps me feel connected to my physical body?
  • What have I learned from my family about security, belonging or stability?
  • Which qualities or values from my family would I like to carry forward?
  • Are there beliefs I learned growing up that I now want to question or explore for myself?
  • What does support look like for me at this point in my life?

Affirmations

I am learning to nurture myself.

I am becoming more aware of what helps me feel grounded.

I am learning to make choices that reflect my values.

I am building foundations that feel right for me.

Sacral Chakra Journal Prompts

The Sacral Chakra is commonly connected with creativity, emotion, pleasure, relationships, boundaries and our capacity to move with change.

Journal Prompts

  • What does creativity mean to me?
  • Where does creativity already exist in my life?
  • What brings me pleasure or enjoyment without needing to be productive?
  • What do healthy boundaries look and feel like in my close relationships?
  • Where could I allow a little more flexibility or movement in my life?
  • What am I curious to create or explore?
  • When do I feel most connected with my passionate or creative side?

Affirmations

I am open to experiencing more creativity and enjoyment in my life.

I am learning to honour my body and my boundaries.

I am giving myself permission to explore what brings me pleasure.

Solar Plexus Chakra Journal Prompts

The Solar Plexus Chakra invites us to explore themes such as confidence, agency, self-belief, decision-making and personal power.

Journal Prompts

  • Where do I feel most confident in myself?
  • When do I look to other people for reassurance or approval?
  • What helps me trust myself when making a decision?
  • Are there situations where I regularly put someone else’s opinion above my own?
  • What am I ready to take greater ownership of?
  • What lights me up or gives me a sense of momentum?
  • What does personal power mean to me?

Affirmations

I am learning to value all parts of myself.

I am becoming more confident in making my own choices.

I am learning to recognise and trust my own agency.

Heart Chakra Journal Prompts

The Heart Chakra is often explored through themes of love, compassion, connection, acceptance, grief, giving and receiving.

Journal Prompts

  • What does compassion for myself look like right now?
  • Where is love already present in my life?
  • How comfortable am I receiving care, kindness or support from other people?
  • How do I know when giving to others feels generous rather than depleting?
  • What does a healthy relationship mean to me?
  • Is there something I am carrying that I would like to understand differently?
  • What might my heart need from me right now?
  • Where could I offer myself a little more acceptance?

Affirmations

I am learning to meet myself with compassion.

I am grateful for the love that is present in my life.

I am becoming more open to receiving as well as giving.

I am learning what caring for my heart means to me.

I would deliberately remove the original prompt that says someone ‘requires forgiveness.’ Forgiveness is deeply personal and isn’t always necessary, appropriate or desirable. Someone can process an experience, maintain boundaries and move forward without deciding they must forgive another person.

Throat Chakra Journal Prompts

The Throat Chakra gives us an opportunity to explore communication, listening, creativity, truth and self-expression.

Journal Prompts

  • Where do I find it easiest to express myself honestly?
  • Are there situations where I regularly hold back what I want to say?
  • What helps me feel comfortable communicating clearly?
  • How well do I listen when someone else’s perspective differs from mine?
  • Do I sometimes overexplain, overshare or redirect a conversation when I feel uncomfortable?
  • What would I like to express more freely?
  • Which forms of creative expression feel most natural to me?

Affirmations

I am learning to express myself clearly and honestly.

I am giving myself permission to take up space in conversation.

I am learning to listen as well as speak.

I am open to exploring my creativity and self-expression.

Third Eye Chakra Journal Prompts

The Third Eye Chakra is commonly explored through intuition, insight, imagination, perception and our capacity for reflection.

Journal Prompts

  • When did I last allow myself to daydream, and where did my mind take me?
  • What vision am I beginning to develop for the next stage of my life?
  • What have I been noticing lately that I haven’t given much attention to?
  • When do I find it easiest to hear, feel, see or know what my intuition may be communicating?
  • Is there a situation I could look at from another perspective?
  • What is the difference, for me, between an intuitive impression and something I strongly want to be true?
  • What am I curious to understand more deeply?

Affirmations

I am learning to listen to my own insight and wisdom.

I am curious about how I naturally experience intuition.

I am open to seeing things from a different perspective.

I am learning to trust myself while remaining curious about what I notice.

That discernment question is one I’d particularly keep. It connects this article naturally with your intuition teaching rather than presenting the Third Eye as simply “seeing signs”.

Crown Chakra Journal Prompts

The Crown Chakra invites us into questions around spirituality, consciousness, interconnectedness and our relationship with something beyond our individual selves.

That doesn’t have to mean believing in a particular idea of the divine. You can explore these questions through your own beliefs, spirituality, relationship with nature or sense of connection.

Journal Prompts

  • What does spirituality mean to me?
  • What does connection to something greater than myself mean to me?
  • Where do I currently place my faith or trust?
  • Which spiritual beliefs feel genuinely meaningful to me, and which have I simply inherited or been taught?
  • When do I experience a sense of connection or interconnectedness?
  • What questions about spirituality am I still exploring?
  • How do I bring my spiritual beliefs or practices into my everyday life?

Affirmations

I am open to exploring what spirituality means to me.

I am becoming more aware of the ways I experience connection.

I give myself permission to question and explore my beliefs.

I am learning what trust and faith mean to me.

Explore the Chakras in Your Own Way

You don’t need to work through every question at once.

Choose one chakra, one prompt or even one word that catches your attention and begin there.

You may find that writing helps you understand what you’re thinking. A question may bring an emotion or memory to mind. You might notice a physical sensation, an intuitive impression, or simply discover that you don’t have an answer yet.

All of that has room.

The chakra system can offer a framework for exploration, but your experience doesn’t need to fit neatly into the framework.

Let the questions create curiosity rather than another set of answers you need to get right.
