Chakras and The Elements

Chakras and elements allow us to understand the concept of energy. Energy is always available to us, and these two energy systems offer us a way to harness it in a supportive and balanced way.

Each chakra is associated with an element. The first five chakras (base/root, sacral, solar plexus, heart and throat) are associated with the physical elements of Earth, water, fire, air and space. The upper two chakras (third eye and crown) are associated with elements of light and thought. To learn more about the chakras, click here (link to another blog).

See the table below, which shows the seven main chakras and their associated elements.

Working with the Elements and Chakras

Below are brief explanations of how each element connects to its associated chakra. I have added a link at the bottom of the page to share free guided practices incorporating the elements to help you connect with your chakra of choice.

Earth Element and Base Chakra

Safety and survival are highlighted in our base, with any actual or perceived issues potentially disrupting its energy flow. Finding stillness is difficult unless we feel safe and secure, especially if our nervous system is heightened and our minds are in overdrive. Connecting with the element of the Earth supports our base or root chakra to feel secure and grounded in the physical body. The Earth offers a feeling of stability and support. The trees remind us to ground and anchor ourselves. If we feel a little lost, we can also return and root ourselves back to the Earth below. This is the key elemental energy that can activate and rebalance the base of our chakra system.

Water Element and Sacral Chakra

As we travel up to the next chakra, the sacral chakra, the vibrational frequency rises, and the physicality of the base chakra energy becomes fluid, connecting with the water element. Close personal relationships are birthed through water, with the connection between mother and father, child and siblings, through the generations. Emotions generated in this space can affect us much more deeply as the water can either hold or cleanse emotions, depending on our choice to release past patterns or continue to allow them to repeat.

Usually, we are unaware of this happening, and as we turn inward and reflect in this energetic space, we can create significant change. This includes not only us but also both past and future generations. Water holds energy, and all emotions create energy. Being around two-thirds water, our body can hold much of this energy and deeply affect our lives. Consisting primarily of water, it is no wonder fluid travels through our bodies in many ways. Examples are the lymphatic system, circulatory system, synovial fluid in the joints and tears from our eyes.

With this awareness and the assistance of the water element, we can clear layers of old, outdated patterns and programs from our psyche. Stuck emotions are like water that sits for too long; we can feel stagnant or unable to wade through the overwhelm. Allowing emotions to move means there is space in the sacral chakra for creativity and passion to unfold.

Fire Element and Solar Plexus Chakra

As we meet the solar plexus, the vibrational frequency continues to rise and expand from the more solid, tangible elements into the transformative flames. Here, we find ourselves and what we have to share with the world.

Fire has the power to transform that which can keep us stuck in the density of the past and propel us forward into a future that we desire. The solar plexus and heart are the seat of potential to create in line with our purpose and walk our life path in a way that resonates with our being. To allow ourselves the opportunity to discover our true strengths and gifts to share, we need to believe in ourselves and witness our worth.

The flames of fire remind us to feel light and dynamic. We can begin to feel the ‘fire in our belly’ or the spark that ‘lights us up’. This element allows us to transmute our fears, doubts and worries and reclaim ourselves, our power and our unique place in the world again. Like the symbol of the phoenix, we can rise from the ashes repeatedly.

Air Element and Heart Chakra

You can probably already notice where the air element is present in your physical body. Consider your respiratory system, which works with breathing and oxygen distribution throughout the body. The air element supports us in feeling expansion as it taps into the heart chakra’s frequency of unconditional love.

Connection with the heart chakra is potent and allows us to access our soul and intuitive wisdom. Through the energy of forgiveness, acceptance and compassion, we begin to transcend all that keeps us separate. We learn the truth of who we are- the divine spirit. When our heart chakra’s energy flows within and radiates into the world around us, we can more easily allow things to be as they are. We move beyond the constant need to change things we have judged out of alignment with our ego desires.

Air holds the energy of expansion that raises frequency from the dense physical world. The birds-eye view is a beautiful example of the capacity to see all sides rather than remain stuck in our worldview as the right way for everyone. Being open and expansive, we can see the bigger picture of what is within and around us. As we see from a broader perspective, the world around us changes.

Space Element and Throat Chakra

When ascending to the higher chakras, our energy becomes even more expansive and interconnected with all that is. We must have solid foundations from the lower chakras to stabilise the potential connected to the upper energy centres.

When the energy is flowing in a balanced way, the throat chakra can assist you in connecting meaningfully with yourself and others through clear communication. However, with an imbalanced throat chakra, our communication may be withheld or misunderstood as the energy held within its frequency holds distortion.

Vibrations are part of all existence, the ether, the space between everything else. These hold the frequency that can transform patterns or keep them stuck in old ways. In the ancient Sanskrit language, the word Akash means space. The Akash is where all information is recorded as vibrations, where different frequencies resonate with and attract their own likeness.

A spacious throat chakra allows us to express ourselves more freely. Space invites room for growth, sharing, creativity and authenticity. Incorporating sound/vibration can help you invite space and feel into the possibility of your self-expression.

Light Element and Third Eye Chakra

The brow centre is the Third Eye. It is the chakra that accesses our insight or sight within. The energy from this space is not something we can seek from outside of ourselves. It is our insight and the capacity to self-reflect.

Light is the element of the third eye chakra and is regulated by the pineal gland in both physiology and the metaphysical. Symbolically, the more we can self-reflect, the more we evolve. By self-reflecting, we gain a deeper understanding of the world within and around us.

We want to shine a light on our shadows, energetic stuckness, and density. The light can shine upon clarity and inner wisdom as that density clears. Using this light element becomes the process of enlightenment or becoming lighter and closer to our divine nature.

Thought Element and Crown Chakra

The crown chakra is based on interconnectedness with our being and oneness with ‘all that is’. It represents the flowering expression of integration with the wholeness of the cosmos. Our ability to fully connect to the cosmos depends on being deeply rooted within the Earth. This also depends on an open in the heart space at the centre of our inner universe. It is essential as it is to awaken in the higher energy realms, but it is equally important to ground this energy back into the physical. This brings balance and cohesion to our lives and our state of being.

Thought is the element that represents the infinite field of consciousness surrounding us. It is the culmination of all elements, reflecting unity and the interconnectedness of all things beyond the awareness of our human or three-dimensional reality—this is where you recognise the divine nature within and around you.

Final Thoughts

I hope the explanations of what each element and chakra can offer our energy systems have been helpful. Deepening our connection to the elements and how they weave through our physical and energy bodies is a potent way to work with the chakra system.
