Reiki and Fertility: Complementary Support During Your Fertility Journey
Fertility journeys can involve a lot.
There may be appointments, tests, decisions, waiting, changing plans and uncertainty. For some people, there may also be IVF or other fertility treatments, pregnancy loss, or experiences that are difficult to put neatly into words.
If you’re already interested in Reiki, you may wonder whether it has a place alongside this experience.
For me, the important distinction is that Reiki isn’t a fertility treatment and I don’t use it to increase someone’s chances of becoming pregnant.
It can, however, be something you choose to experience alongside the medical care and fertility support you’re receiving.
You might be thinking about conception, actively trying to conceive, undergoing fertility treatment, navigating pregnancy loss, or facing questions about whether and how your fertility journey continues.
Why Might Someone Choose Reiki During a Fertility Journey?
People come to Reiki for many different reasons.
During a fertility journey, sometimes what someone wants most is a place where they don’t need to achieve anything.
There is no test to pass during Reiki.
You don’t need to be more positive.
You don’t need to relax enough to become pregnant.
And you don’t need to work out what you’re doing ‘wrong’.
You can simply have some time in which you aren’t being asked to make another decision or monitor another outcome.
Some people find Reiki relaxing. Others appreciate the quiet or the opportunity to turn their attention inward for a while.
Your experience may be completely different.
As with any Reiki session, I don’t expect you to feel a particular sensation or have a particular emotional or spiritual experience.
Reiki Alongside IVF and Fertility Treatment
If you’re undergoing IVF or another form of fertility treatment, Reiki should be considered complementary to your medical care, rather than an alternative to it.
Your fertility specialist and healthcare team remain the appropriate people to advise you about your treatment, medications, procedures and chances of conception.
A Reiki practitioner shouldn’t make decisions about those things for you.
You also don’t need to use Reiki to ‘prepare’ your body energetically for IVF or clear something before a transfer.
If you choose Reiki during this time, it can simply be one way to give yourself dedicated time and attention alongside everything else you’re navigating.
Fertility, Stress and the Pressure to Relax
One phrase people navigating fertility difficulties often hear is:
‘Just relax.‘
I don’t think that’s particularly helpful.
Stress is part of being human, and fertility difficulties can understandably bring uncertainty, frustration, sadness, anger and many other emotions.
Having those feelings doesn’t mean you’ve created your fertility difficulties or that you’re preventing yourself from becoming pregnant.
You don’t need to successfully regulate, release or transform those emotions in order to deserve a positive outcome.
If you find Reiki relaxing, wonderful.
But relaxation doesn’t need to become another fertility task you have to perform correctly.
What Might We Explore During a Reiki Session?
A fertility journey can bring many things into your awareness.
You might want to talk about how you’re feeling before your Reiki session, or you may prefer not to.
You might be navigating uncertainty, disappointment, changing expectations or decisions about what comes next.
Perhaps your relationship with your body feels different after medical treatment or pregnancy loss.
Or perhaps you don’t want to explore any of that during your session.
That’s okay too.
I won’t tell you that difficult emotions are stored in a particular chakra, that a subconscious belief is preventing pregnancy, or that your energy needs to be cleared before you can conceive.
If something intuitive arises during our work together, I can share it as an observation or something for you to consider.
You decide whether it has any meaning or relevance for you.
Reiki After Pregnancy Loss
Pregnancy loss can be an intensely personal experience, and there is no single way someone should feel afterwards.
If you’ve experienced miscarriage or another form of pregnancy loss, Reiki isn’t a way of clearing grief or moving you through it more quickly.
You may simply want somewhere quiet to be with yourself.
You don’t need to make meaning from the experience, find a spiritual reason for what happened or be ready to ‘let go’.
If what you need is specialist emotional or psychological support, Reiki isn’t a replacement for that care.
It can sit alongside appropriate support if Reiki is something you personally find meaningful.
When Your Fertility Journey Reaches a Crossroads
Sometimes a fertility journey reaches a point where the questions begin to change.
You may be deciding whether to continue fertility treatment, considering different pathways to parenthood, facing health, relationship, financial or other circumstances that affect your choices, or beginning to contemplate the possibility of being childless not by choice.
That can bring grief, uncertainty, anger, relief, fear, conflicting emotions — or feelings that change from one day to the next.
Reiki can’t make that decision for you, and I wouldn’t use intuitive or energetic work to tell you which path you’re supposed to take.
But you may choose Reiki as somewhere to pause while you’re navigating that crossroads.
You don’t need to arrive ready to accept what is happening, find a positive perspective or decide what comes next.
There can simply be room for whatever this stage of your experience brings up, without needing to turn it into a lesson or immediately find meaning.
If intuitive or archetypal themes arise, we can explore them with curiosity rather than using them to predict your future or tell you whether motherhood is or isn’t part of your path.
If you’re grieving the possibility of a life you expected to have, specialist counselling or support for involuntary childlessness may also be an important part of the care around you.
What About Chakras, Archetypes and Intuitive Work?
Because my broader work includes intuitive and energetic practices, sometimes clients are curious about exploring those frameworks alongside Reiki.
We can do that without using them to explain fertility.
For example, you may feel drawn to reflect on the Sacral Chakra, traditionally associated with themes including creativity, emotion, relationships, and pleasure.
An archetype such as Mother might also raise interesting questions about identity, expectations, or what motherhood means to you.
But neither framework tells us why someone is or isn’t becoming pregnant.
I wouldn’t interpret a Sacral Chakra experience as evidence of a reproductive problem, or suggest that working with the Mother archetype will improve fertility.
These practices can be used for reflection without turning them into diagnosis or treatment.
Do I Need a Series of Reiki Sessions for Fertility?
No.
I don’t prescribe a particular number or frequency of Reiki sessions to improve fertility outcomes.
You might choose one session.
You might enjoy Reiki and decide you’d like to return.
Or you might decide it isn’t something you want to continue.
If you’re undergoing fertility treatment, your medical treatment plan comes from your healthcare team. Reiki doesn’t replace or determine that plan.
