What Is Energy Healing?
Energy healing is an umbrella term for a range of practices that work with concepts of life force or subtle energy.
Different traditions understand this in different ways. You may have come across terms such as Ki or Qi, Prana, chakras, meridians or nadis. These ideas come from different cultural and philosophical systems, so they aren’t necessarily describing exactly the same thing.
Reiki is one form of energy healing, and it sits at the heart of much of my work at Green Heart Healing Space.
People explore energy healing for many different reasons. Some are curious about Reiki or energy work. Others enjoy having dedicated time to slow down and turn their attention inward. Some want to explore their intuition, emotions, or spiritual practice.
You don’t need to know exactly what you believe about energy healing before experiencing it.
Curiosity is a perfectly good place to begin.
How Is Energy Healing Understood?
Within energy-healing traditions, different frameworks explain the relationship between our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experience.
In Reiki, for example, we work with the concept of Ki, or life-force energy.
Chakra-based practices use another framework, exploring energy centres and the different qualities traditionally associated with them.
Other systems have their own histories, practices and terminology.
I find these frameworks useful for exploration, but I don’t use them to diagnose what is happening within someone’s physical body or to tell a client that a particular symptom means their energy is “blocked”.
Instead, energy work can create an opportunity to notice.
What are you experiencing?
What has your attention?
What feels relevant to explore?
What happens when you give yourself time without needing to fix or solve something immediately?
Sometimes the questions themselves are useful.
What Does Science Say About Energy Healing?
It’s worth making an important distinction here.
Science uses the word energy in a specific, measurable way. Energy-healing traditions use terms such as life-force or subtle energy within their own philosophical and spiritual frameworks.
They shouldn’t automatically be treated as the same thing.
You may see energy healing explained through quantum physics, frequencies, electromagnetic fields or the idea that everything is energy. I don’t think we need to borrow scientific terminology to make an energetic or spiritual practice meaningful.
Research into complementary practices continues, but that isn’t the same as having scientific evidence for the energetic mechanisms described within systems such as Reiki.
For me, it’s more useful to be clear about the framework I’m working within and allow you to decide how it fits with your own beliefs and experience.
What Might an Energy Healing Session Be Like?
There isn’t one universal energy-healing session.
What happens depends on the modality, the practitioner, and their approach.
During Reiki, for example, you might lie comfortably while the practitioner places their hands gently on or just above different areas of the body.
Online energy work may look quite different. There may be more conversation and reflection alongside Reiki and intuitive practices.
People also experience sessions differently.
You might notice warmth, coolness, tingling, imagery, thoughts or emotions. You might become very relaxed. You may notice very little at all.
You don’t need to have a particular experience for the session to be worthwhile.
If an image, feeling or intuitive impression arises, it doesn’t automatically need to mean something profound.
It can simply be something you notice and, if it feels relevant, explore.
Who Can Explore Energy Healing?
You don’t need to be spiritual, highly intuitive or experienced with energy work.
Some people come because they’re already familiar with Reiki or energy healing. Others have no idea what to expect and simply feel curious.
Energy healing is generally used as a complementary practice, not a replacement for medical or psychological care.
If you’re experiencing physical or mental health symptoms, it’s important to seek appropriate healthcare rather than relying on energy healing to diagnose or treat them.
You can still choose to explore energy work alongside that care if it feels right for you.
How Do I Choose an Energy Healing Modality?
Rather than trying to work out which modality will “fix” what’s happening, start with what you’re actually looking for.
Perhaps you’d like a quiet Reiki session where you can simply lie down and receive.
Maybe you’d prefer something that combines physical bodywork with Reiki and energy work. Or you may want a more active, collaborative session where you can explore intuitive information and what you’re noticing.
It’s also worth considering the practitioner themselves.
Read about their training and approach. Look at how they describe the work. Notice whether there is room for questions and whether they clearly explain what the session does — and doesn’t — involve.
You don’t need someone else to decide what your energy means for you.
A practitioner can bring their training, observations and experience while still leaving room for your own interpretation.
Energy Healing at Green Heart Healing Space
My energy healing work is grounded primarily in Reiki and intuitive energy work.
Depending on how you’d like to experience the work, there are a few different ways to explore it.
Reiki Healing offers dedicated time to receive Reiki in person at my treatment space in Everton Hills, Brisbane.
Intuitive Reiki Massage combines bodywork with Reiki and intuitive energy work, allowing the session to move between physical and energetic practices depending on what we’re working with together.
Online Intuitive Energy Healing is more collaborative and can be experienced from home. These sessions combine distance Reiki with intuitive and energetic practices, conversation and reflection.
Although each session is different, my approach remains the same: I can share what I notice and bring my experience as a practitioner, but I won’t tell you what you should feel or decide what an experience means for you.
