What can I expect during a Reiki Healing?
If you’ve never experienced Reiki before, it’s completely understandable to wonder what actually happens during a session.
Will you feel anything? Do you need to meditate? Will the practitioner touch you? What if you don’t experience anything at all?
The short answer is that Reiki can feel different for everyone.
Some people notice warmth, coolness, tingling or other sensations. Some become deeply relaxed or drift in and out of sleep. You might notice thoughts, emotions, colours or imagery, and sometimes the experience is very quiet.
There isn’t a particular sensation you need to have, and I don’t use what you feel during Reiki as a measure of whether you’ve had a ‘good’ session.
You can simply lie down, receive and notice your own experience.
What Happens During a Reiki Healing?
A Reiki session is usually experienced lying comfortably on a treatment table while fully clothed.
Before we begin, we’ll have a brief conversation about what has brought you in and anything you’d like me to know. You don’t need to arrive with a specific intention or problem to solve.
During the Reiki portion of your session, I’ll work through a series of hand positions, placing my hands gently on or just above different areas of your body.
Reiki comes from a Japanese system of practice that works with the concept of Ki, or life-force energy.
You may also hear Reiki discussed alongside the chakra system. Chakras come from a different tradition but are commonly incorporated into Western Reiki practice and contemporary energy work.
You don’t need to understand either system before receiving Reiki.
You don’t need to do anything while you’re on the treatment table. You don’t need to concentrate, clear your mind or try to feel the Reiki.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
This is probably one of the questions I’m asked most often.
People can experience Reiki in many different ways.
You might notice:
- warmth or coolness
- tingling or other physical sensations
- a feeling of heaviness or lightness
- colours, imagery or memories coming to mind
- thoughts or emotions
- a sense of relaxation or quiet
- very little sensation at all
All of those experiences are okay.
If you feel emotional during Reiki, that’s okay too. You might cry, laugh, sigh or simply notice an emotion coming into your awareness.
I don’t automatically interpret that as an “emotional release” or evidence that Reiki has cleared something from your energy.
Sometimes emotions arise when we finally have some quiet. Sometimes something has been on our mind. And sometimes we don’t know why an emotion appears.
You don’t have to give every experience a meaning.
What If I Don’t Feel Anything During Reiki?
Then you haven’t done anything wrong.
One idea I particularly want to challenge around Reiki is that strong sensations equal strong Reiki.
They don’t need to.
Someone might experience warmth, tingling, colours and imagery throughout a session. Another person might lie quietly and notice very little.
Neither experience is more spiritually significant than the other.
The same applies when you’re learning Reiki. I don’t expect my students to experience Reiki in one particular way, and I don’t expect my clients to either.
Your experience is allowed to be your experience.
What Reiki Is — and Isn’t
Reiki is a Japanese system of practice that works with Ki, commonly translated as life-force energy.
It has a spiritual dimension, but Reiki is not a religion, and you don’t need to subscribe to a particular religious belief to explore it.
Reiki is also different from massage.
Reiki treatment involves no kneading or manipulation of muscles. You remain fully clothed, and Reiki can be offered through gentle touch or with the practitioner’s hands held above the body.
Reiki is a complementary practice. It isn’t a substitute for medical or psychological assessment, diagnosis or treatment.
Do I Need Reiki?
I wouldn’t tell somebody that they need Reiki.
You don’t need to wait for your body to give you a sign, identify an energetic blockage or have something wrong before booking a session.
You might simply be curious.
Perhaps you’ve experienced Reiki before and enjoy it. Maybe you’ve been busy and want uninterrupted time where you don’t have to do anything. You might be interested in energy work or spirituality, or Reiki may simply be something you’ve wanted to experience for yourself.
Those are all perfectly reasonable reasons to book.
If Reiki isn’t what you’re looking for, that’s okay too.
How Often Should I Have Reiki?
There isn’t a schedule everybody needs to follow.
Some people enjoy Reiki occasionally. Others choose to book more regularly for a period of time. You might have one session and decide that’s enough, or discover that you’d like to return to Reiki.
I don’t believe you need a monthly energetic “tune-up” to keep your energy functioning properly, and I don’t prescribe a series of Reiki sessions to clear particular physical or emotional blocks.
If you’d like another session, we can talk about what you’re looking for, and you can decide what feels useful for you.
Can Reiki Help With Stress, Anxiety, Pain or Sleep?
People often become interested in Reiki while experiencing stress, difficulty sleeping, pain, anxiety or other health concerns.
It’s important to distinguish someone’s personal experience of Reiki from a promise that Reiki will treat a particular condition.
Reiki can be used as a complementary practice alongside conventional healthcare, but it shouldn’t replace appropriate medical or psychological care.
You also don’t need a health condition to experience Reiki.
For many people, simply having dedicated time to lie down, be quiet and receive is part of what they value about the experience.
What to Expect During a Reiki Healing With Jade
My Reiki sessions are intentionally simple.
You’ll arrive at my treatment space in Everton Hills, Brisbane, and we’ll have time to talk briefly before you settle onto the treatment table.
From there, you can simply receive.
I may notice things intuitively while I’m working, but I don’t use those impressions to diagnose your energy or tell you that a particular thought, belief or experience is causing something within your body.
If something feels relevant to share, I can offer it as an observation rather than an answer about you.
You remain the authority on whether it resonates.
You don’t have to spend your Reiki session analysing yourself.
Sometimes the most valuable thing is simply having somewhere you don’t need to perform, explain or achieve anything.
